The San Antonio Military Health System is adjusting its COVID-19 drive-thru screening and testing hours of operation over Labor Day weekend.

BAMC, WHASC chosen for COVID-19 vaccine trials

WASHINGTON — As part of the Operation Warp Speed, or OWS, goal to deliver safe and effective vaccines and therapeutics by January 2021, five Department of Defense locations have been identified to participate in the Phase III trial evaluating the vaccine candidate AZD1222 under development by AstraZeneca. Two of the locations are in San Antonio.

The parking lot located across from the refractive surgery center on Pepperrell St. will be closed, tentatively beginning 2 Sept. 2020, to facilitate the placement of additional temporary administrative facilities that will help support the ongoing efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus. Please use an alternative parking location until further notice.

For COVID-19 related symptoms during duty hours, please call the Consult and Appointment Management Office (CAMO) at 210-916-9900 to schedule a Virtual Appointment with your PCM team. For general COVID-19 questions and information, please call or send a secure message to your PCM team or refer to guidance on the CDC's COVID-19 website. After duty hours, call the MHS Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-TRICARE (824-2273) or visit MHSNurseAdviceline.com to speak or chat with a nurse. Thank you for your patience and support. COVID-19 patients can give back

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Tex. — With flu season fast approaching and no approved vaccine developed for COVID-19, supplies of life-saving measures such as blood and plasma are being put under strain. To help hold back the tide, the Defense Department has established a goal of obtaining 10,000 units of donated COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) by Sept. 30, 2020, to combat the potential rise in cases.

Medical centers no longer permitting masks with valves

For safety purposes, effective 24 Aug., masks with filter valves or vents will no longer be permitted for wear in all San Antonio Military Health System facilities, to include BAMC, WHASC and all outlying clinics.

Update to SAMHS COVID-19 testing

Lackland Air Force Base, Tex. — In order to sustain COVID-19 testing capability, San Antonio Military Health System will no longer test asymptomatic personnel at its drive-thru screening and testing sites. Testing for symptomatic active duty and military beneficiaries will continue to be conducted. We are continually assessing this evolving situation and will be sure to pass on any updates/changes.

Groundbreaking “Stop the Bleed” implementation at BAMC

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — Brooke Army Medical Center is installing Stop the Bleed kits throughout the hospital to be used in the event of an active shooter or other scenario involving traumatic blood loss. The kits, which contain items such as a tourniquet and trauma dressing, are part of the Stop the Bleed campaign, an initiative to aid an injured person in the event of uncontrolled bleeding.
