JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
All Joint Base San Antonio Air Force members who need a shaving waiver will need to make an in-person appointment at either Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center at JBSA-Lackland or the JBSA-Randolph Clinic in the coming weeks, according to medical officials.
The Department of the Air Force updated its medical guidance for shaving profiles on Dec. 15, 2025, to align with the Secretary of War’s grooming standards.
Effective Jan. 31, 2026, all shaving profiles issued before March 1, 2025, are invalid. Airmen and Guardians who have medical shaving profiles issued prior to March 1, 2025, will need to schedule an appointment with a military health care provider for further evaluation before the January deadline.
“These briefings/appointments are intended for service members who are requesting shaving waivers, said Col. (Dr.) H. Mikaela Kim, Chief of Aerospace Medicine, Lackland Medical Group. “Airmen based at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston and JBSA-Camp Bullis are likely to be sent to either JBSA-Randolph and JBSA-Lackland, based on current survey result, unless demand changes.”
At the appointment, service members will receive their shaving waiver renewal (or initiation) and education that accompanies it.
“Profiles will be granted for 30 days only initially, then will be followed up on appointment-based follow-ups to see the progression,” Kim said. “Follow-up appointments will be conducted via usual appointment booking at this time, until further notice.”
On Jan. 15, there are briefings planned for the command teams (commanders and first sergeants) of individual units, to discuss the updated policy on shaving waivers.
