Research Education Academy

The Research Education Academy (REA) is part of the "grow medical leaders" initiative of the 59 MDW Chief Scientist's Office operating at the basic and intermediate levels of research education. REA provides a Basic level research education experience by participating in STEM outreach with community high schools and training for enlisted medical specialists.

With guidance from Education and Training (J7), REA is positioned to provide STEM education and provide military academy physician shadowing and summer project internship opportunities.

59 MDW, Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio have established an Education Partnership Agreement, through which REA participates in to accomplish STEM outreach. The intermediate level research education experience of REA is accomplished through offering on-demand research education by accomplished 59 MDW/ST PhD-level scientists in study design, funding acquisition and project management to residents, fellows and staff, as well as conducting biannual grant writing workshops which segways into more advanced research education programs such as the Clinician Scientist Investigator Opportunity Network.

Additionally, the REA program of 59 MDW/ST is partnered with the Center for Biotechnology (4D Bio3) at Uniformed Services University to offer more biotechnology-focused training as well as University partnerships to enhance education and training for the warfighter. Grant writing workshops are held twice yearly in Q2 (Apr-Jun) and Q3 (Jul-Sep) to supplement the more formalized Clinical Investigation Research Training in Q1 (Jan-Mar) and Research Fundamentals Workshop in Q4 (Oct-Dec).
