COVID Vaccine Update cao April 14, 2021

By 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs

Within the San Antonio Military Health System, we have only administered the Pfizer COVID vaccine. Yesterday, federal officials paused the use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine out of an abundance of caution due to several occurrences of rare but dangerous blood clot cases. The connection between the vaccine and the blood clots is not known and is being investigated at this time.  At the recommendation of the FDA and the CDC, the Department of Defense has immediately paused the use of J&J vaccine. While SAMHS administers the Pfizer vaccine, we know there are beneficiaries out there who may have received the J&J vaccine off base. Currently, the recommendation for those who have received the J&J vaccine within the last three weeks is: if you develop a severe headache, abdominal pains, shortness of breath then you should seek medical attention. We will continue to provide updates as we receive them.
